UIC AIAA Club Flies High at Hamilton Elementary

When Hamilton Elementary School 4th and 5th grade decided to have their first paper airplane contest, they reached out to MIE—to see if any engineers could help their students craft the best paper airplanes. Three MIE students and members of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics club, Kyriakos Anastasopoulos, Collin Brady and Oliver Sanchez, rose to the occasion, heading to Hamilton Elementary on April 22, 2014 to guide Hamilton’s students in their preparations.
“They [the students] were so excited to learn about how you may use engineering in your careers, and are hooked on making different planes with the suggestions you gave to them,” said Kerrie Rovito, 4th-8th Grade Science Teacher at Hamilton.
Along with helping the Hamilton Elementary students design and their best planes, the AIAA Club members also talked about things like the basic mechanics of how an airplane’s shape and wings affect flight, and how the students could modify their planes to change directions.

As Anastasopoulos, Brady and Sanchez prepare for finals week and commencement, Hamilton students will also be working hard to win their Inaugural Paper Airplane Invitational, on Wednesday, April 30, 2013.

MIE Graduate Students Sweep ASHRAE Illinois Chapter 2014 Scholarships

Winners of the ASHRAE Illinois Chapter 2014 Scholarships were announced recently and all four winners are from the MIE Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Three winners are enrolled in the Master of Energy Engineering program and one is working on a M.S., Mechanical Engineering. Congratulations to Kelly Costello, Ben Campbell, Matt Kaleta and Amir Salarifard.

Professor Rodica A. Baranescu joins new National Committee

Rodica A. Baranescu has been nominated as a member of the National Committee on:
“Assessment of Technologies and Approaches for Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles, Phase 2″
This Committee – composed of experts from industry, academia and research institutions will work under the Assignment of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies to provide guidance to NTSA and EPA in view of future regulations regarding efficiency of vehicles in the 2018-2025 time frame.

Engineers fine-tune the sensitivity of nano-chemical sensor

Professor Alexander Yarin selected as distinguished professor

Congratulations to MIE Professor Alexander Yarin, selected as a 2014 UIC Distinguished Professor. This award, which is bestowed upon only a select few faculty members at UIC every year, recognizes Professor Yarin’s significant impact on his field through scholarship, creativity and leadership.
